The Harbour Street property sits inside a protected conservation area, so the roof could not simply be replaced. Roofaro reclaimed three quarters of the original slate, sourced a quarry match for the rest, and rebuilt the leadwork by hand to keep the building looking exactly as it always had.

THE CHALLENGE

Slipped Slate, Failed Lead, and Rules That Left No Shortcuts.

Nail fatigue had let dozens of slates slip, the valley leadwork had cracked along every fold, and water had been tracking into the roof space for at least two winters. Conservation rules ruled out modern substitutes, which meant every repair had to be done the original way.

OUR APPROACH

We stripped the roof in bays, sorted every slate by condition, and reclaimed 74 percent for reuse. New battens and a breathable membrane were fitted beneath, valleys were recast in code five lead, and each slate was refixed with copper nails so the next generation inherits a roof that will not slip again.
